Alice Springs

Alice Springs is the largest fuel hub in Central Australia. It is the last place where travellers will find multiple competing fuel retailers before travelling to destinations such as Uluru, Kings Canyon, East and West MacDonnell Ranges, Simpson Desert and Tennant Creek. Because of this, it is generally recommended that visitors fill up before leaving town, even if they expect to refuel at a roadhouse later.

Travel Tips

Alice Springs is the largest fuel hub in Central Australia, with most service stations offering Unleaded 91, Premium Unleaded 95 and 98, diesel and, at selected locations, AdBlue and Low Aromatic Unleaded (Opal fuel). Fuel prices are generally the most competitive in the region, making it a good place to fill up before travelling to remote destinations, where prices are typically higher. Many service stations also offer convenient traveller amenities, including convenience stores, coffee, toilets, air and water, ice, BBQ gas exchanges and caravan-friendly access. Before setting off, plan your fuel stops, check opening hours in remote areas, ensure your vehicle has sufficient fuel to reach the next stop with a safety margin, and check the NT Government's MyFuel NT website for the latest fuel prices.

West MacDonnell Ranges

Hermannsburg

Ntaria Supermarket and Fuel in Hermannsburg is ideal for a stop to get petrol, have a toilet break and grab a cold drink. Located 126km west of Alice Springs along Larapinta Drive, Hermannsburg is home to the famous indigenous artist Albert Namatjira as well as the Hermannsburg Potters, so aside from petrol, there is a range of interesting cultural discoveries to find here, too.

Glen Helen

Located approximately 132km west of Alice Springs in the West MacDonnell Ranges (Tjoritja), Glen Helen offers a self-service fuel stop with both Unleaded and Diesel available. The unmanned fuel station is easy to miss, consisting of a white fuel tank with a self-service pump, so keep an eye out as you approach.

As with many remote fuel stops, fuel is supplied via outback transport networks and occasional outages can occur. If you're travelling through the Red Centre, it's always wise to plan ahead, monitor your fuel levels and avoid relying on a single refuelling location.

Kings Canyon

Kings Canyon Resort

Found right next to the resort itself, Caltex at Kings Canyon is a great stop before venturing further into the desert. Found right off Luritja Road, the service station has a small restaurant, convenience store and with the resort itself right there it’s ideal for spending a night or two knowing you can fill up the tank and have a good night’s sleep before a new day of outback adventure!

Kings Creek Station

Lasseter Highway

Fuel is available along the Lasseter Highway, but there are relatively few fuel stops compared to urban highways. Travellers should plan ahead, particularly if towing a caravan, driving a motorhome or travelling outside normal business hours. There are 3 stops that provide petrol along the Lasseter Highway.

Shell Yulara

This is the closest fuel to Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park for those visiting the region.

Curtin Springs

The Curtin Springs is a convenient fuel stop on the Lasseter Highway, located approximately 85 km east of Yulara and 100 km west of Erldunda. The roadhouse offers unleaded petrol and diesel, making it a popular place to refuel before continuing to Uluru Kata Tjuta National Park, or Kings Canyon. Travellers will also find a range of amenities, including accommodation including comfortable rooms or camping sites, a café, basic groceries and visitor services such as the famous Paper Tour, making Curtin Springs an ideal place to take a break and prepare for the next stage of the journey.

Erldunda Desert Oaks Resort

Erldunda is located at the junction of the Stuart and Lasseter Highway on a sealed road. It stocks petrol and diesel, it has convenience store, a bar and accommodation for drivers who need a rest before continuing their journey. For those who just need a short rest-stop, local Emus can provide a great entertainment while breaking up the journey.
