Description

Serpentine Gorge is a narrow gap in the West MacDonnell Ranges, 100 kilometres west of Alice Springs. Follow a well marked path and easy path to the gap and peaceful waterhole or take a short but exhilarating hike up a precarious trail to the lookout above the cliffs. This lookout offers one of the most spectacular panoramas in Central Australia. The fascinating geology of the rugged MacDonnell Ranges is sure to impress.

Serpentine Gorge is a part of the Carpet Snake Dreaming and many of the areas in the gorge and western cliffs have special significance to the Western Arrernte custodians.

The water, which forms at the entrance to the mouth of the gorge, is protected for environmental and cultural reasons and should not be entered.

Serpentine Gorge is also the Trailhead for Sections 7 and 8 of the Larapinta Trail, a 223-kilometre long distance walking trail through the West MacDonnell Ranges.

Access is by a dirt track and is 4WD recommended. Conventional two-wheel drive vehicles will have particular difficulty negotiating the track in wet weather. This road is not suitable for buses and caravans. Camping is permitted (fees apply). Make sure you secure your spot online.
