By Road

If you are driving to Central Australia access is via sealed roads or a range of four-wheel drive tracks. Sealed highways provide access into the region, the Stuart Highway from Adelaide and Darwin, the Barkly Highway from Queensland and the Lasseter Highway from Uluru.

Access to the Red Centre may also be made by way of the partially unsealed Plenty Highway from Queensland or the Tanami Road from Western Australia. Contact the Visitor Information Centre or check on government road reports for up to date conditions prior to travel.

The DIY Tourguide Audio Travel Guides (available as a CD or MP3) provide informative tours along popular driving routes meaning you will be able to learn about the history and flora and fauna in the region from the comfort of your vehicle. Driving routes include Alice Springs to Uluru and West MacDonnell Ranges.
