Fuel Stops on the Plenty Highway

The Plenty Highway is a 498 km outback route connecting the Stuart Highway, approximately 68 km north of Alice Springs, to the Queensland border. Forming part of the iconic Outback Way, the route traverses spectacular desert landscapes, remote cattle stations and Aboriginal communities. While sections remain unsealed, it provides an important east west link for adventurous self-drive travellers.

Gemtree

Just 138km northeast of Alice Springs, Gemtree Caravan Park is much more than a place to refuel. Located on the sealed section of the Plenty Highway, it's a popular stop for travellers looking to stretch their legs, enjoy a meal or spend a night in the outback. Along with unleaded petrol and diesel, Gemtree offers a licensed country store stocked with basic groceries, takeaway meals, barista coffee, cold drinks and ice cream. Travellers will also find clean amenities, a 24-hour free payphone, laundry facilities, a swimming pool for park guests, an effluent dump point and Telstra 4G and Optus mobile coverage. If you have a little extra time, Gemtree is renowned for its guided gem fossicking tours and nearby gem fields, making it one of the most unique stops along the Plenty Highway.

Harts Range (Atitjere)

Located around 216km east of Alice Springs, Atitjere Homelands Store in Harts Range is a convenient place to top up both your fuel tank and supplies. It's a handy stop before continuing east along the Plenty Highway into some of Central Australia's most remote country.

Jervois

Approximately 350km from Alice Springs, Jervois Station Roadhouse is an important refuelling stop for anyone travelling the Plenty Highway. In addition to petrol and diesel, you'll find toilets, hot showers, drinking water, a public payphone, a small store and camping facilities, making it an ideal place to rest for the night or simply take a break from the drive. Surrounded by the rugged beauty of the eastern outback, it's well worth spending a little time soaking up the peaceful atmosphere before continuing your journey.

Tobermorey

Around 223km east of Jervois, Tobermorey Station Roadhouse & Caravan Park is the last fuel stop in the Northern Territory before the Queensland border. Along with fuel, the roadhouse offers a convenience store with basic groceries, camping and caravan sites, accommodation and a welcoming place to rest after a long day on the road. Set amongst shady lawns and open green spaces, it's a surprisingly peaceful outback oasis where travellers can relax, stretch their legs and prepare for the next leg of their journey.
