Ranked as one of the planet's top 20 treks, the Larapinta Trail is a 223 kilometre walking track which traverses the magnificent, semi-arid landscapes and impressive, rocky ranges of the West MacDonnell National Park. The trail extends from the historic Alice Springs Telegraph Station to the peak of Mount Sonder, rewarding hikers with breathtaking views along the way.

It encompasses the key attractions of the National Park, including; Simpsons Gap, Standley Chasm and the permanent waterholes at Ellery Creek Big Hole, Ormiston Gorge and Glen Helen. Weaving through some of the world's most ancient metamorphic and igneous rock formations, it is home to an array of native birds, reptiles and marsupials and hosts nearly 600 species of rare flora.

Description

Many other walking tracks link in with the Larapinta Trail, providing for an even deeper exploration of the West MacDonnell National Park. Don’t miss the spectacular Pound Walk at Ormiston Gorge!

Along the way, camp under the spectacular southern skies and marvel at the mysteries of the Milky Way. Most camp sites have picnic tables, designated tent sites and toilet facilities. All trail- heads have a water supply (requires treatment) and some offer free gas barbecues. Please note that camp facilities and water supplies are only serviced between April and September.

Challenge yourself to hike the whole trail (14 days minimum) or tackle one of the 12 sections, which vary in difficulty and length. Fully guided and catered tours are offered by 'Trek Larapinta' & 'Walking Country' between April and September. Otherwise, set off on your own ensuring that you're well equipped, have ample water carrying capacity, have organised ground support and notified the relevant authorities.

All 12 sections require a good level of fitness and some planning. Keys to food storage boxes, National Park notes, guide books and the Larapinta Trail Packs are all available from the Alice Springs Visitor Information Centre, on the corner of Todd Street Mall & Parsons Street. Chat to the friendly staff here for advise on how to plan your trip and get the most out of your Red Centre trekking adventure.

Central Australia experiences extreme heat conditions from October through to March, which can pose a serious risk to hikers and result in high bushfire danger. During this time, the Larapinta Trail sites, facilities and water supplies are not maintained, all commercial operations are suspended and trekking is highly discouraged.
