Driving through ‘The Barkly’? Allow plenty of time for some of the varied attractions spread across the region.

No matter where you’re heading make sure you stop in Tennant Creek. At Nyinkka Nyunyu Art & Cultural Centre you can delve in to the rich cultural heritage of the Warumungu people who have lived in the region for thousands of years. Take one of the tours with local legend Jerry Kerry.

For a more recent perspective on local history, the Battery Hill Mining Centre is a ‘must-see’. Gold was discovered just north of the town in 1926. The gold rush of 1932 helped build the town, and by 1935 the population grew to over six hundred. The mining centre has daily underground tours and a museum profiling life during the era and other artefacts relating to the town’s mining history.

More local history can be found at Tuxworth-Fullwood House, home of the Tennant Creek National Trust. The building was an Australian Army camp hospital during WWII and later housed the outpatients department.

Beyond the town the Tennant Creek Telegraph Station, built in 1872, provides an insight to the Overland Telegraph that connected Australia to the outside world. From here it is a short drive to Kunjarra / The Pebbles, a fascinating granite formation and sacred site for the Warumungu people.
