The Animal Encounters at the Alice Springs Visitor Information Centre give visitors and locals a unique opportunity to get up close and personal with some of our native wildlife.
The trained wildlife handlers from the Alice Springs Desert Park will introduce you to one of their most striking residents- The Barn Owl. This beautiful bird is the most widespread landbird species in the world, occurring in every continent except Antarctica. Its pale, heart-shaped facial disc gives it a distinctive appearance. Contrary to popular belief, it does not 'hoot' but produces a characteristic shree-like scream, that can be ear-shattering at close range. The Barn Owl mates for life, only forming a new pair bond when one of the pair dies or, occassionally, if breeding is unsuccessful. Being nocturnal feeders, these birds, although relatively common, can be rare to spot in the wild.
Join our friendly staff and chat with the wildlife experts in the Visitor Information Centre, on the corner of Todd Street Mall and Parsons Street, every Thursday from 11:30am to 12:30pm to have a live and intimate encounter with this mesmerising bird.
